1 Introduction
This document defines the communication protocol for the Recording Data and Rights Standard and was developed by member organisations of the Digital Data Exchange, LLC (DDEX). Any organisation wishing to implement a DDEX standard is required to apply for an Implementation Licence. The terms of the licence and an application form can be found here and here.
The RDR-C is Part 1 of the Recording Data and Rights standard (RDR). This part of the RDR standard, together with Part 2, the Recording Data and Rights Notification (RDR-N), Part 3, the Recording Data and Rights Revenue Reporting (RDR-R) and Part 4, the Rights Claim Conflict (RCC), provide various mechanism for owners of sound recordings and music licensing companies to easily and efficiently exchange data about rights claims and revenues for such right claims.
This part of the RDR standard defines an automated message exchange protocol that enables the reliable communication of DDEX messages and associated documents such as resource files, using cloud-based storage (such as SFTP). It enables the secure transmission of data and caters for non-repudiation requirements to be met and, while the location and owner of the cloud-based storage server is not defined herein (this is left to be agreed by the owners of sound recordings and music licensing companies), the organisation of the servers and names for files are defined by this standard.
This version of the RDR-C standard applies to the message exchange of the latest versions of the RDR standards, namely version 1.1 of Part 3 of the RDR standard and the newest addition, version 1.0 of Part 4 of the RDR standard.
This part of the RDR standard does not apply to the communication of messages created in accordance with the Music Licensing Company Message Suite and Choreography Standard (MLC).
